Lipedema and Genetics

Statistical data shows that lipedema and heredity are correlated. The condition concerns exclusively women, and we often see prevalence within the broader family tree.

Studies so far indicate that the genetic correlation is approximately 60%. In practice, this means that a woman with lipedema has a 60% chance of passing the predisposition for lipedema to her female descendants.

Since the condition does not manifest in men and because many women remain undiagnosed, the correlation between lipedema and heredity may actually be even stronger.

The Search for Biomarkers in Lipedema and Heredity

Early findings suggest that lipedema may be linked to an autosomal dominant gene with incomplete penetrance, which practically means that not all individuals carrying the gene will develop the condition.

Extensive research is being conducted to identify biomarkers, meaning laboratory findings that can confirm diagnosis. Many different parameters are being studied, such as blood lipid profiles, serum cytokines, MRI imaging, and more.

In the future, we may be able to detect cases where lipedema and heredity coexist much earlier, either through genetic testing or laboratory examinations, helping us to prevent its manifestation.
