Lipedema and Obesity

Body weight plays a very important role in the manifestation of lipedema, but in turn, lipedema as a condition often leads to an inability to maintain a low body weight. Therefore, we are talking about a vicious cycle, which is difficult to manage.

The medical community worldwide has defined a specific threshold at which body weight is considered to negatively affect lipedema, and this is related to BMI (Body Mass Index). BMI is a measure of body weight in relation to height and age. You can calculate your own BMI here:

Regarding lipedema, we consider that in patients with a BMI over 35, that is, type 2 obesity and above, weight loss is necessary before proceeding with therapeutic management of lipedema through liposuction. Weight loss before treatment can be achieved to some extent through dietary measures, bariatric surgery, or pharmaceutical options.

It should be noted that in some cases, when BMI is over 35, it is possible to start the therapeutic liposuction process, always selecting the appropriate candidates. However, when BMI is lower, liposuctions are more effective, or fewer procedures are needed to achieve the desired result.
