When is a lip lift recommended?

A lip lift, meaning the surgical lifting of the upper lip, cannot correct every age-related change that occurs around the mouth — however, it can very effectively restore the position and shape of the upper lip. For this reason, this particular facial plastic surgery procedure is ideal for individuals with a long distance between the upper lip and the base of the nose, or in cases where the upper lip has dropped downward like a curtain, completely covering the upper teeth even when smiling.

Since the position of the upper lip depends not only on age but also on anatomical factors, there is no strict age limit for a lip lift. It is generally indicated when the upper lip covers the upper teeth and there is a disproportion in relation to the jaw and the rest of the face.

As a general guideline, there is an indication when the absolute height of the philtrum — the area between the base of the nose and the upper lip border — exceeds 15 millimeters.

Lip lift techniques

The lip lift procedure is performed under local anesthesia, either as a standalone treatment or in combination with other facial rejuvenation procedures such as a facelift. After precise assessment and measurements, a small strip of skin is removed at the base of the nose, extending up to the outer edges of the nostrils.

The design and planning must ensure that the entire lip is lifted evenly and symmetrically, avoiding excessive central elevation that could create an unnatural “rabbit mouth” appearance. The extent of undermining can reach the nasolabial fold, depending on the needs of each patient.
The incision is placed discreetly at the base of the nose, allowing for excellent healing and a barely visible scar.

A lip lift can also be combined with other facial procedures, such as a facelift, fat transfer to the upper lip or perioral area, or laser/chemical peeling of the lip skin for enhanced results.

Recovery After Lip Lift

After surgery, special adhesive strips are placed over the incision and the upper lip and are removed together with the sutures on the 5th postoperative day.
During the first few days, patients should avoid wetting the area, minimize mouth movements, and expect some swelling of the upper lip.

Bruising and swelling usually subside within 10 days, while the scar fades gradually over the following months until it becomes almost invisible.

Can lip lift correct mouth asymmetry?

In certain cases—for instance, when there’s drooping of one corner of the mouth—an asymmetric correction can be performed to achieve symmetry. However, the improvements achievable with lip lift are limited exclusively to the lip itself and cannot correct asymmetries located higher up or involving other areas of the face.
