The surgeon
Dr Prodromos Papaioannou, plastic surgeon in Thessaloniki and Athens
I am a plastic surgeon trained entirely in Germany, where I qualified as a specialist in 2012. I have worked in Greece since 2013, and today I operate only in two accredited hospitals, in Thessaloniki and Athens. My specialisation is deep plane facelift and facial surgery, and I also perform breast, body and gender-affirming procedures.

What is my philosophy in plastic surgery?
“I want my patients to know that they have beside them a surgeon who leaves no detail to chance, and at the same time a doctor with empathy.”
For me, plastic surgery means precision and care for the person. I work only in surgery, I operate on every patient myself and see them at every follow-up, so that every decision, from the consultation to the final result, goes through me.
A doctor who listens and understands what really concerns you, with the consistency, organisation and professionalism I learned in Germany. That is why I do not offer injectable treatments or threads: every patient knows from the start that I will operate on them and follow them up myself.
How did I get here?
2005
Germany
Two years of general surgery in Pirmasens, then specialist training in plastic surgery in Hamburg and Magdeburg.
2012
Specialist plastic surgeon
Followed by two years as Leitender Oberarzt (deputy head) of plastic surgery in Braunschweig.
2013
Back to Greece
For two more years I work in both countries. I work alongside my father, Dr Kostas Papaioannou, a plastic surgeon with long experience in facelift surgery.
Deep plane
The next step
After lectures and workshops by Timothy Marten on the high SMAS, Andrew Jacono’s technique convinced me to move to the deep plane.
Today
Thessaloniki and Athens
50–70 deep plane facelifts a year. I see the facelift as the summit of plastic surgery: it is where art, technique and the demand for perfection meet.

Where did I train?
I trained entirely in Germany. After two years of general surgery in Pirmasens, I specialised in plastic surgery in Hamburg and Magdeburg and qualified as a specialist in 2012. Two years as Leitender Oberarzt in Braunschweig followed.
I spend most of my time in the operating theatre. To stay up to date, each year I choose 2–3 specialised congresses, facelift labs and workshops.

Where do I operate?
Only in two hospitals accredited by Joint Commission International (JCI), both with an intensive care unit. Most operations are day surgery; when needed, you stay the night in hospital, with the same team.

Do you operate on every patient yourself?
Yes. I operate on every patient myself and follow them up at every check, from the first consultation to the final result. I also always do the consultation myself, either at the practice or by video call.
Which hospitals do you operate in?
Only at Interbalkan Medical Center in Thessaloniki and at Athens Medical Center in Marousi, Athens: two hospitals accredited by JCI.

Do you also offer non-surgical treatments?
Here I work only in surgery. Skin treatments and lymphatic drainage are done at Essentia, the medical aesthetics centre I founded. I do not offer injectable treatments or threads.
